Connect Deeply Around Social Action

Next social action worship sharing: May 17
Topic: AI

The Zoom link is below. After worship sharing, we’ll chat a bit. The goal is to share information and form supportive connections across OVYM, while maintaining a spirit-led focus on our social action.

Quotes:

     1. AI won’t replace humans, but humans who use AI will replace those who don’t.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI

2.     The question of whether a computer can think is no more interesting than the question of whether a submarine can swim.

Edsger W. Dijkstra, Computer Scientist

3.     The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race….It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate. Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete, and would be superseded.

-Stephen Hawking, as told to the BBC

4.     I don’t want to really scare you, but it was alarming how many people I talked to who are highly placed people in AI who have retreats that are sort of ‘bug out’ houses, to which they could flee if it all hits the fan.

-James Barrat, author of Our Final Invention: Artificial Intelligence and the End of the Human Era, as told the Washington Post

5.     If AI growth races ahead of local water capacity, we risk creating what has been called “digital dustbowls.” But if we make the right decisions today, we could lock in water security for decades. Some of those decisions include continuing to invest in renewable energy (which uses far less water than its fossil fuel alternatives) and adopting cutting-edge cooling systems that significantly improve water use efficiency.

-Matthew Pine, CEO, Xylem as reported in World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting (https://www.weforum.org/stories/2026/01/ai-water-data-centres-opportunity-am26-wef-xylem/) [NOTE: Xylem is in Yellow Springs!]

Queries:

1.     What kind of emotions does AI inspire in you?

2.     How does AI enhance or detract from your life?

3.     What kind of social action do you feel called to do with respect to AI?

Looking forward to connecting with one another in this time of political chaos!

About This Page

In our 2024 annual sessions, OVYM approved the creation of a Social Action Coordinator.

The purpose of this role is to "empower, support, cross-fertilize and encourage social justice activities within monthly meetings," i.e., to help us to do the work that we are called to do in the world.
