Connect Deeply Around Social Action
February 8th @ 5PM
Topic: Magic Penny
The Zoom link is below. After worship sharing, we’ll chat a bit. The goal is to share information and form supportive connections across OVYM, while maintaining a spirit-led focus on our social action. (Note: we are skipping worship sharing on January 25th because of Quarterly Meeting.)
Quotes:
1.Love is something if you give it away, give it away, give it away Love is something if you give it away, you’ll end up having more. It’s just like a magic penny, hold it tight, and you won’t have any. Lend it, spend it, and you’ll have so many, they’ll roll all over the floor! -Lyrics from Magic Penny by Malvina Reynolds 2.“Our home burned. […] In the end, the only pictures I have of my early childhood came from the pictures which were given away. Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles realized how much those photos would mean to my parents. They gifted them back. I discovered the year of the fire, how quickly possessions can disappear. Love remains. Like our lost pictures, only what was given away is something I possess today. The less we give of ourselves to the world, the less we receive back. What we hang on tightly to, we are most likely to lose. The more love we give away, the more we are surprised by love coming back.” -Shirley Hobson Duncanson 3.”I used to think I was an optimist, but I have to laugh. Let me quote a Malvina Reynolds poem: ‘If this world survives, and every other day I think it might.’ Malvina was one of my heroes. But if anybody asks what the chances are that the human race makes it, I’d have to give it a 50-50 chance. But that’s because this implies that any one of us might be the grain of sand to make the scales go the right way, instead of the wrong way.” -Pete SeegerQueries:
- What do you tend to hold to tightly that you wish you could more easily give away?
- When has a gift you’ve freely given returned to you manyfold?
- Do you have regrets about how much you gave or didn’t give at various points in your life?
Looking forward to connecting with one another and spirit to encourage sharing one another’s gifts in this time of political chaos.

About This Page
In our 2024 annual sessions, OVYM approved the creation of a Social Action Coordinator.
The purpose of this role is to "empower, support, cross-fertilize and encourage social justice activities within monthly
meetings," i.e., to help us to do the work that we are called to do in the world.
